Brasstronaut is a band I found on a mix of new indie music. Their horn sounds and vocal cadence reminds me of some of The Kooks slower stuff. I find myself coming back to this song and I have listened to their ld World Lies EP and enjoy the composition. Check out the latest song from this EP (on Unfamiliar Records):
Also, you can download "Slow Knots" from their website.
I always enjoy happy songs and this band, Cloud Nothings definitely qualifies. Low-fi sound is also always a plus. These tracks are reminiscent of a lot of stuff I have including old Beck and newer stuff like Japandroids. You'll see them on this playlist. Check them out.
Spring Break is upon us. So whether you are planning to take off, just be out of class, road trip, make it out to SXSW or plan on doing nothing, you need some tunes to listen to. So here are a few of our favorites, new and old to get you in a celebratory mood. (Since this is a collection of new and old, it's a mix of lala.com streams and downloadable mp3s where available)
It will take place April 10, noon to 9pm at Rice University in a field between the RMC and Herring Hall. Always a great free show and it promotes Houston's only indie college radio station.
Out today is "The Brutalist Bricks" from Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. TL&TP is one of my favorite bands, and this new album does not disappoint. Coming with hard, fast guitar lines and Ted Leo's great voice the songs are quick and to the point. His edgy punk songs are true to this album.
A great add to your collection or if you haven't indulged into this great band, do so now.

Cross Chatter Records dropped us a line via twitter to spread the word that Tempe, AZ band Small Leaks Sink Ships has made their latest single Glass Hypnotist available for download. Check the band's facebook page to have a listen to three other tracks.
Val: It's always great to get a chance to listen to new artists and appreciate the opportunity to review new music. Listening to the three latest tracks available on the band's facebook page, I was pleasantly surprised at the musical orchestration that the tracks offered. While the beats and organization of the track are satisfying the vocalization is a bit off. I like the offbeat vocals but it seems to be a bit much at the break. I look forward to hearing more from this band and catching them live if they come to Houston.
With the new album being released this month, the album in it's entirety has been released for a listen. Personally, I am having issues with their new sound. It's not that I expect them to just put out the same stuff from their previous albums, but why the new change? I enjoyed the slow and sweet sounds of 2005’s Descended Like Vultures and the deep rhythms of 2007’s Asleep At Heaven’s Gate.
It seems the switch to a more pop sound is a reflection of where they are now. It hasn't turned me off of them, just a new type of Rogue Wave to get adjusted it to.
You guys might remember OK Go's 2005 video A Million Ways, and unless you just discovered the internet today, you've see their 2006 video for Here It Goes Again. Well, from the looks of it the band has topped all of that with their latest video for This Too Shall Pass. Have a look:
If you haven't already heard, Brit virtual band Gorillaz third album Plastic Beach drops here in the States on March 9th. To promote the release of their latest LP they have made the video for the albums first single, Stylo, available for viewing here via youtube. Aside from the 3-d makeover, the video also includes an appearance by a bounty hunting Bruce Willis .
In addition to the video, you can stream the entire album here. Personally, I've only listened to a few tracks so far, and while nothing grabs me the way previous tracks Dirty Harry or Clint Eastwood did I've still been quite impressed with the new direction this album has taken the band. Have a listen for yourself and let us know what you think.
Making their second appearance at SXSW this year, Bear Hands is bringing with them an EP of 3 songs which leads off with "What a Drag". This single has a great hook and back beat. Listening to their others songs, their sound a mix of indie pop and with a bit of post-punk all rolled into one.
The Morning Benders are offering listeners the chance to stream their new album Big Echo in it's entirety before it drops on March 9th. The band had previously given away the first two tracks , Excuses and Promises, as free downloads so return the favor and give the album a listen. Visit their website to preview/preorder the album or to grab yourself a free track or two. If you're too lazy to visit their site, no worries, just stream the album below.
Free music? At no cost to you (other than taking a few seconds to support some environmental legislation)? Well, it just doesn't get much better than that, even if it means getting suckered into downloading more garbage from The Decemberists.
As noted over at Pitchfork, Bonnaroo has teamed up with voter registration organization HeadCount, and environmental activist group the NRDC Action Fund to offer The Best of Bonnaroo, a 17 track compilation including indie fav's such as Wilco, Death Cab for Cutie, and My Morning Jacket.
Complete track listing:
01 Wilco: "Bull Black Nova" 02 Pearl Jam: "Animal" 03 Jack Johnson: "Inaudible Melodies" 04 Dave Matthews Band: "Rapunzel" 05 Death Cab for Cutie: "Cath..." 06 Ani DiFranco: "Fuel" 07 Phish: "Kill Devil Falls" 08 Gov't Mule: "Banks of the Deep End" 09 O.A.R.: "Delicate Few" 10 moe.: "Not Coming Down" 11 Raphael Saadiq: "100 Yard Dash" 12 Bob Weir & RatDog: "Throwing Stones" 13 The Disco Biscuits: "And the Ladies Were the Rest of the Night" 14 The Decemberists: "The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid" 15 My Morning Jacket: "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" (Velvet Underground cover) 16 Guster: "Happier" 17 Phil Lesh and Friends: "Box of Rain"
For us poor Houston folk who can't shell out the 500 for SXSW or make the trek to a festival like Bonneroo, Houston is having it's annual Free Press Summer Fest this June 5-6th. The lineup this year is pretty sweet and I am psyched to attend both days. Last year had about 2-3 acts I had wanted to see, but this year promises more bands that remain on several of my playlists.
You can purchase advance tickets and I am definitely going to go for the fancy pants passes, because summer in Houston is no joke. Access to shorter drink lines and cool off tents will be worth the money.
Also there are some local bands performing like Wild Moccasins, Spain Colored Orange and The Watermarks. I enjoyed seeing The Wild Moccasins a couple of years ago for their intro indie pop sounds. Should be a great festival.
Okay gang, today will be the first in a weekly series of posts I like to call My Monday Mixtape. I'll consider this my chance to hook you up with a weekly sampling of what we're listening to over at Casa de Indie. Some mixes will simply be the best of what's currently in heavy rotation on our Ipods, others will be timely mixes for the season, or collections of music that somehow have a uniting theme, but mostly it's just a chance for us to pimp some of the songs and artists that we love.
